Willa Cather’s My Antonia and how it defines womenhood

Through her cast of characters and what they experience, how does Cather capture what it means to be a woman in the frontier environment of early Nebraska? Pay particular attention to the transformations of Ántonia and the lives of the so-called “hired girls.” First, put the characterization of female characters and the book’s commentary on being a woman in the context of 1918 conceptions of women.
