What was your social media use like when the class started? What is it like now?

write my post:
We’ve talked about many topics here: theories, advertisements, violence, crime, families, health, and more.

Reflect on the following and please answer each question thoroughly:

What was your social media use like when the class started?
What is it like now?
How has this class changed your social media usage and why? If it didn’t, what are you currently doing to be more aware of social media usage around you?
Have you seen any theories or course material on your current social media? What are they?
What did you learn from the class?
What was your favorite topic covered? Did you have a favorite assignment? What was your least favorite topic/assignment and what would you suggest to make it better?
Have you shared any information from the class with family/friends? If yes, what? If no, why not?
What was your final project about? What did you learn or find from completing your research?

When was your social media usage before class and now?

I use social media about the same as I did before class, I did download the app LinkedIn to help with networking because this is my last class and I will have completed my Bachelor’s degree.

How has the class changed your social media usage and why? I do look at social media differently now because of all the theories that I have learned in this class. I also have really been focusing on how many people are on their phones and what are they looking at? We are most definitely addicted to our phones and I am trying to stay off of mine a little less.

Have you seen any theories or course material on your current social media? Yes I have and I am guilty of it myself the Use and Gratification theory. We use social media as a form of away to escape, and get pleasure in other people who comment or like a post or a picture we post. I noticed that I see that theory a lot when people are on vacation posting pictures of where they are and what they are doing.

What did you learn from the class? I learned a lot from this class especially how social media use has an actual addiction to it. I didn’t realize how too much social media can cause depression, anxiety, sleep disorders which are all physical things which can affect your health and well-being.

What was your favorite topic? My favorite topic was on mental illness and social media. My favorite assignment was the podcast one. My least favorite one was the first one where we had to find a celebrity and talk about their social media usage, theories etc. I usually don’t follow celebrities so that was one where I actually had to think of celebrity that I wanted to find out more about.

Have you shared any information from the class with family and friends? Yes I have especially with my two daughters who are raising my grandchildren. They are both on social media a lot and share a lot of stuff so I have talked about some of the theories I have learned and how they relate to social media.

What was your final project? What did you learn? My final project was about “Teen social media addiction”. Addiction runs through my family mainly drug and alcohol addiction so I wanted to learn about social media addiction among teens. I learned this is a real addiction and is recognized as an addiction the specific name for this addiction is “Problematic Interactive Media Use” (PIMU). PIMU can result in academic, social withdrawal, behavioral problems, and affect families and can lead to physical and mental problems. The problem is there is no official diagnosis for this or no standardized tests to identify this addiction. I feel the future will shed more light on this addiction.
