Wetlands Mitigation Discussion

Disney World in Florida wants to expand onto a wetland adjacent to the park. It has offered to buy and preserve a large nature preserve in a different area, or convert farmland to a constructed wetland, to make up for the wetlands it is destroying. Is this reasonable? What conditions would make it reasonable or unreasonable? Before beginning this discussion, reread Chapters 13 & 21 and read the sections on freshwater wetlands in your text, pp. 127-129, including, ‘The Everglades (Chapter 6); Case in Point’; pp. 307-308, ‘Creative Approaches to Cleaning Up Mining Areas’ (Chapter 15) and pp. 356-357, ‘Wetlands’ (Chapter 17).In addition to the textbook readings, read more about the Importance of Wetlands in the ‘Web Links’ module.Mitigation is defined as,’ Repairing or rehabilitating a damaged ecosystem or compensating for damage by providing a substitute or replacement area.’ There are also links under the ‘Web Links’ button where you will find information about Wetlands Mitigation Banking, Orlando Wetlands Park and Constructed Wetlands. You will see what sections to read under each web link, in the web link module. You can also find the documents ‘Wastewater Wetlands’ and ‘Success at Stennis in Unit 7.Do not use other resources besides the ones assigned in the text and the web links. In the past students have used articles and homework help sites and submitted them as their work. This is plagiarism. I have become very familiar with these web sites and any submission that uses the wording from them will be given a zero. Remember that this is your opinion and must be expressed and supported in your own words. Do not use quotes. You are allowed to use terms that are specific to the subject, like ‘constructed wetlands’ and ‘mitigation’ without changing them. Use of long quotes from the materials will result in loss of points. I want to see that you understand the material, not that you can copy it.When you are finished reading the materials, post an original response to the two questions from above, ‘Is this reasonable? Why or Why not?’ and ‘What conditions would make it reasonable or unreasonable?’ Your original post must have a minimum of 350 – 400 words stating your point of view, supported by the information from the readings. You must discuss all 3 of these aspects in supporting your opinion in your original post; the importance of wetlands, the concept of mitigation banking and the effectiveness of constructed wetlands (Think to yourself, how did this information affect my opinion?).You have plenty of time, so I expect thoughtful, professional, fact-based posts. You cannot go back and edit your posts, so proofread carefully before submitting.Follow the 1-5-3 format; post 1 original response to the discussion prompt, read 5, and respond to 3. You must post an original response to the discussion prompt to read the other student’s posts. Your responses to other students must be at least 75 – 80 words, and must be based on facts. Respect other student’s right to their opinion.Your original post is due DECEMBER 5, 11:59 p.m. The discussion will be open until SATURDAY, December 11, 11:59 p.m. for response posts. Late posts will lose 1 point for every 24 hour period that they are posted past the due date.
One third of your grade will be based on the quantity criterion being met; numbers of words and posts. Use proper grammar and spelling. Do not use emoticons, excessive punctuation or capitalization, abbreviations, slang, etc. The other two thirds will be based on the quality of your original post and responses; i.e. have you supported your posts with facts from the assigned readings?IMPORTANT: This discussion is your final exam. If you do not participate in this discussion, it is the same as not attending a face to face final exam, and you will automatically receive one half letter grade lower than you calculated final average!
