Henrietta’s cells were the first immortal human cells ever grown in culture. They were essential to developing the polo vaccine. They went up in the first space missions to see what would happen to cells in zero gravity. For two decades, Mrs.Lacks’ cells were commercialized and distributed across the globe unknown to her family. Contributing to nearly 75,000 studies, Henrietta Lacks’ cells have paved the way for advancements from HPV and polio vaccines to medications for HIV/ AIDS and breakthrough including in vitro fertilization.
