CASE STUDY: UBER/AIRBNB and the Ethics of Sharing In this case study, you will explore societal changes brought on by the “sharing economy” and examine the role of corporate ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability in developing a new economy. Companies like UBER and Airbnb are often in ethical conflict with regulators and governments who operate with an “industrial age” model as opposed to a “digital age” model.
After reading the case study and from a “business ethics” perspective, in 5 pages or more and in APA format answer the following questions: How should the “sharing economy” be defined? Is UBER/AIRBNB an example of the “sharing economy”? Who are the winners and losers from the introduction of UBER/AIRBNB? What are the potential environmental sustainability benefits of UBER/AIRBNB and other “sharing economy” businesses? What do you think about how UBER/AIRBNB has acted with regulators to date?
Could UBER/AIRBNB have improved its business position by taking a different stance? Should UBER/AIRBNB change its stance towards regulators as its model becomes more universally accepted? Why is it important to UBER/AIRBNB to be considered a technology platform and not a transportation company? What would the implications be if UBER/AIRBNB were a transportation company/hotel chain? Is it okay for UBER/AIRBNB to violate local laws if it truly provides better service than taxi’s/chain hotels? Be comprehensive in your assessment by referencing material discussed this semester. DO NOT list the questions as part of your assessment. A copy of the case study is posted below.
