Where are some examples of where math and technology are used in our daily lives, and how it works.
Be clever here, we all know about televisions, telephones, computers …
But what about other areas of our lives?
Elevators use technology to determine which floor to go to next, they do this by starting at the top (or bottom, for bottom just reverse this logic.) and moving to the highest called floor to pick up passengers. Then they move down toward the lowest called floor stopping on the way for any other floors called.
This is called elevator seeking, we probably all know that, but were you aware that in order to reduce thrashing on physical drives elevator seeking algorithms were employed, picking up the largest amount of data per physical sweep? prior to this a drive might pick up from locations in this order.
Order of requested data: 1 9 2 8 3 7 4 6 5
Original algorithms picked up data in this order: 1 9 2 8 3 7 4 6 5 causing the drive to change directions 8 times to collect the data, and traveling 36 units (1 to 9 is 8 units)
Elevator seeking (yes derived from the elevators algorithms) change the order and buffer the results resulting in data being picked up 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 causing the drive to change directions 0 times, and traveling 9 units on a mechanical device this makes a huge difference in its lifetime.
