Jamie Cortez’s book “ Gordo” offers insight into the world of Mexican American children in farm working communities in rural California during the 1970’s. As a member of this community, Cortez offers us a look into lives that we may not get to see. Throughout the book, the vignettes offered show characters like Gordo, Delia, Raymundo, Cookie, Alex, The Prado’s, and Los Tigres as complicated human beings who, even from a young age, navigate both the hope that “ maybe” life will be better and the complex personal histories that impact how they move through the world. For essay 1, I would like to select 1 character to reflect on in detail. I would like you to answer the following question(s) with your essay:
How does your character show us, as readers, the complexity of being a human being? Why? ( Explain !!! don’t write summaries ) What evidence can you point to ? Why is that evidence revealing or important?
