Select one and only one of the following essay options and form a essay argument supporting it:
A.) Memory–and the ability to memorize both large amounts of information and recall them quickly–has long been associated with intelligence in our culture. Argue instead that memory is not in fact all that critical to our intelligence.
B.) Technology–from writing to the printing press to the modern era of the internet–is increasingly replacing our need for “internal memories” due to the existence of new, accessible, and convenient “external memories.” Argue that this is somehow hurting us cognitively more than it is helping us.
C.) In a culture that largely prizes memory and might even consider a “photographic memory” hugely advantageous, we sometimes forget the worth of forgetting. Argue that forgetting is a more useful ability than remembering.

D.) In “Funes the Memorious,” Borges explores how memory affects language and thought. Explain first what that relationship seems to be exactly, according to Borges, and then argue to what extent memory is in fact a hindrance or help to our consciousness’s processing of thought and experience.
Whichever essay option you choose, you must do the following:

You must refer directly to both Foer’s Moonwalking with Einstein and Borges’s “Funes the Memorious.” That requires directly quoting both texts (Foer must be quoted at least three times, Borges quoted at least once).
You must support your main answer thoroughly with high-quality premises, meaning premises that are sound (both true and relevant). You will spend energy demonstrating that your premises are indeed true and relevant to your main thesis claim.

You may do the following, but are not required to do so:

You may use outside research for examples or data that serve your argument. All sources must be cited correctly both in the body of the paper and on a Words Cited page. (If you elect to only use Foer and Borges and not do any other research, no Works Cited page is required).
You may use personal examples, but only if those examples are relevant to your case.

These guidelines and grading posts will align with a grading rubric for this essay that constitute multiple criteria I will be specifically grading for, detailed below.

The essay rubric on Canvas will detail more specific comments about what fulfilling each criteria item means exactly. The online posts will further explain each criteria as well.

DEADLINES and IMPORTANT DATES

Your final draft is due online by Friday, September 16, 11:59 p.m.

During Week 4, under the “Assignments” tab and linked to the Canvas frontpage will be the essay assignment submission link prompt. Click “submit assignment,” and then upload your essay file (choose a word or pdf file format please). Once you click “submit,” your paper will be officially turned in.

To ensure academic honesty, your essay file will be run through a plagiarism detector (Unichecker). If your file cannot be scanned, then it will not be graded. Make sure you are using the proper file format (pdf or word file). If I see a file that has not passed through the plagiarism software, I will reach out to you and we will determine how to convert the essay properly.

Any late paper receives no credit. Any missing paper receives no credit.

Any late or missing paper results in a withdrawal from the course. See the syllabus for details of these policies.

You have the option to show me a rough draft of your paper any time between now and Thursday, September 15, by noon. You may email me a copy of your paper (attached as a pdf or word file). You may also bring a draft to office hours, either in person or on zoom. You also may choose to discuss a draft with me during our open conferences during Week 4 (in the classroom, on the day and time of our regularly scheduled class). You may send multiple rough drafts, but rough drafts are optional. Conferences during Week 4 are also optional.

Furthermore, you will have the option to revise this paper for a new grade. See the syllabus for details about the course’s revision policy. Revisions for Essay #1 are due no later than Friday, October 7, by 11:59 p.m.

choose a topic out of A,B,C,D and write about it. I would rather you choose A because it is the easiest. however, You will have to read a book called “moonwalking with einstein” and use multiple quotes from their in the essay to support what you are talking about.
